Twin-flowered Agave (Agave geminiflora)
Agave geminiflora is an evergreen succulent with a short or nearly absent stem, forming a compact rosette and usually growing as a solitary rosette. It is a perennial, monocarpic plant; after the rosette matures, it produces a flower stalk, and the main rosette dies after flowering and setting seed.

Overview
Agave geminiflora is an evergreen succulent with a short or nearly absent stem, forming a compact rosette and usually growing as a solitary rosette. It is a perennial, monocarpic plant; after the rosette matures, it produces a flower stalk, and the main rosette dies after flowering and setting seed.
Origin and habitat
Sources differ in their accounts of its native range in western Mexico, principally in Nayarit and Jalisco. Sources differ in descriptions of its natural habitats, which include rocky terrain, oak woodland near stream valleys, and transition zones between tropical dry forest and temperate forest. Sources differ on climatic details and elevation, but describe a pronounced dry season, with rainfall concentrated from summer into winter and drier conditions in spring.
Characteristics
Mature plants reach 50–100 cm in height and 50–100 cm in spread. The mature rosette bears numerous linear, slender, dark green, flexible leaves that may arch outward with age; the leaves are convex, have fine white horny margins often bearing curled white threadlike fibers, lack marginal spines, and may have a short terminal spine. Sources differ in their descriptions of the flowers and inflorescence, but report flowers generally borne in pairs on a tall, unbranched inflorescence, with green or yellow-green lower portions and reddish to purple tones above. The plant stores water in its leaves, and its fruit is reported to be a tough, persistent, three-angled, oblong capsule.
Light
It grows in full sun to part shade and is suited to bright light or part shade.
Watering
Sources differ in watering guidance, but describe the plant as drought tolerant and recommend restrained watering during growth, with moderate summer watering potentially improving its appearance; watering should be greatly reduced in winter and prolonged wetness of the growing medium avoided.
Temperature and dormancy
The stated minimum temperature is -3 °C, and it tolerates brief light frost. It rests in winter and has good heat tolerance, with sources describing its heat tolerance as excellent.
Growing medium and mounting
Use a well-drained growing medium; sandy or loamy media can be used, and a cactus-type medium is suitable for containers, while the RHS lists acidic to neutral conditions as suitable. It is generally reported to need a very fast-draining mix.
Feeding
Diluted liquid fertilizer is reported to be suitable for occasional application during the growing season.
Propagation
Agave geminiflora can be propagated from seed or by separating offsets or suckers when present; its seeds generally take a period of time to germinate under suitable temperatures. Propagation methods include seed, offsets or suckers, and bulbils.
Common problems
Scale insects are reported as a possible pest, while the RHS generally reports few disease problems. Cultivation guidance generally recommends avoiding prolonged winter wetness and using well-drained planting conditions outdoors to prevent winter rain from keeping the plant persistently wet. It tolerates light frost but should be protected from severe freezing; keeping it dry in cold conditions is more favorable, and it is sensitive to cold, wet winter conditions.
Identification
Agave geminiflora forms a very compact, symmetrical rosette of numerous narrow, elongated, flexible leaves that often bear curled white threads; its flowers are typically paired, a feature referenced by the epithet geminiflora. Compared with the Agave filifera group, its leaves are more rounded and bear fewer threadlike marginal fibers.
