Overview

Goeppertia orbifolia is an evergreen, perennial herbaceous plant with a clumping, upright to columnar habit.

Origin and habitat

Goeppertia orbifolia is native to Brazil, with its native range further described as northeastern and southeastern Brazil. Its habitat includes the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and rainforest environments of eastern Brazil.

Characteristics

Sources differ on mature size, placing height at about 60.96–91.44 cm and spread at about 30.48–60.96 cm. It is reported to grow quickly. The large, simple, nearly round leaves have wavy margins and glossy surfaces, with a dark green ground color, silver-green stripes, and pale green to silver-green undersides. The small, white, tubular flowers are not notably ornamental and rarely appear in indoor cultivation; flowering is reported from spring to summer.

Light

It grows in bright indirect light, filtered light, or partial shade, while strong direct sunlight should be avoided because it can scorch the leaves.

Watering

Keep the growing medium consistently moist without allowing it to become waterlogged or excessively wet; water moderately during active growth and keep it only slightly moist in winter. Distilled water or rainwater is recommended to reduce the risk of leaf-tip browning associated with fluoride in tap water.

Humidity and airflow

Goeppertia orbifolia prefers high humidity, with a humidity range of 60–100 %.

Temperature and dormancy

A minimum temperature of about 16 °C is reported, although sources are few.

Growing medium and mounting

Use loam or potting medium that is moist but well drained and acidic to neutral; descriptions specifically include slightly acidic potting medium and peat-free potting medium.

Feeding

Fertilize monthly during the growing season; a balanced liquid fertilizer is recommended.

Propagation

Propagate by division; sources differ on timing, with recommendations for division in spring or rhizome division in summer.

Common problems

Potential pests include mealybugs, spider mites, aphids, scale insects, glasshouse whiteflies, and glasshouse red spider mites. Serious disease problems are generally absent, but overwatering can cause root rot and wetting the leaves during watering can lead to leaf spot. It is reported that low humidity or fluoride-containing tap water can brown leaf margins and tips, insufficient water or low humidity can cause leaf curling, insufficient light can fade leaf color, direct sunlight can scorch leaves, and overwatering can cause root rot. It needs warm, stable, highly humid conditions and should be protected from cold air, drafts, and marked temperature fluctuations.

Identification

Goeppertia orbifolia is distinguished by large, nearly round leaves with a dark green ground color and prominent silver-green stripes, forming a dense, upright clump.
