Paphiopedilum hybrid (Paphiopedilum hybrid)
Paphiopedilum hybridum is reported to be a perennial, evergreen orchid that is mainly terrestrial, although some groups may be epiphytic or lithophytic; it grows sympodially and lacks pseudobulbs.

Overview
Paphiopedilum hybridum is reported to be a perennial, evergreen orchid that is mainly terrestrial, although some groups may be epiphytic or lithophytic; it grows sympodially and lacks pseudobulbs.
Origin and habitat
The native range of the genus Paphiopedilum is reported to extend from South Asia through Southeast Asia and southern China to New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and the Bismarck Islands. Most species are reported to grow terrestrially in the humus layer of forest floors, while a smaller proportion are epiphytic or lithophytic. The genus generally favors shaded environments with warm to intermediate conditions and some atmospheric humidity, although temperature needs differ among leaf types and parentage.
Characteristics
Sources are few, but mature height is reported to be about 15–50 cm. Leaves form fan-shaped clusters from new growths without pseudobulbs; they range from short and rounded to long and narrow, and some types have mottled foliage. The flowers have a distinctive slipper- or pouch-shaped lip and may be brown, green, yellow, white, pink, or multicolored; most species bear a single flower on each growth, while some types and their hybrids can have multi-flowered inflorescences, and the flowers may be waxy and long-lasting. Flowering time is reported to vary markedly by species and cultivar.
Light
Paphiopedilum hybridum generally favors low light to bright, indirect light, with strong sunlight avoided; it can be grown under shade. Sources are few, but a light level of about 12000–20000 is reported.
Watering
It is generally best to keep evenly moist throughout the year without prolonged waterlogging, using a medium with good drainage and aeration to reduce the risk of root rot; indoors, watering can be repeated when the medium is approaching dryness.
Humidity and airflow
Sources differ, with a reported humidity range of about 40–70 %. It generally prefers moderate humidity and needs good airflow.
Temperature and dormancy
Paphiopedilum hybridum is reported to belong to the intermediate temperature group. Reported guidance generally describes an intermediate temperature range, with weaker tolerance of lower temperatures; sources differ on the upper temperature limit.
Growing medium and mounting
It is generally terrestrial, with fleshy roots, and a bark and sphagnum mix is reported as a suitable medium preference. An orchid medium that retains moisture while draining well is generally recommended and may combine fine to medium bark with perlite, coarse sand, sphagnum, or pumice; types requiring calcareous conditions and their hybrid descendants may have suitable calcium-bearing material added.
Feeding
Sources differ, but regular feeding during growth is described while avoiding concentrated fertilizer and salt buildup; lower-concentration liquid fertilizer may be used, with the medium flushed with plain water when appropriate.
Propagation
In cultivation, Paphiopedilum hybridum is generally propagated by division, with larger plants separated into groups of fan-shaped growths; larger divisions are reported to favor subsequent flowering, while seed propagation is also widely used commercially within the genus.
Common problems
Scale insects are reported to hide in the center of the leaves and weaken the plant. Soft rot may occur, and poor airflow, persistently wet or poorly drained medium, or prolonged rain can increase rot problems affecting the plant base or roots. Aged medium and fertilizer-salt buildup can also create cultivation problems, while strong sunlight is generally unsuitable and cool conditions combined with wet leaves or crowns can favor rot. In hot conditions, increased shade, humidity, and airflow are generally needed.
Identification
Paphiopedilum hybridum is reported to lack pseudobulbs and have fan-shaped leaf growth, while the flower has a conspicuous pouch-shaped lip resembling a slipper.
